Join award-winning watercolorist Chris Sommerfelt as she returns for another series for new watercolor students or students looking to improve their watercolor skills. * Chris has been teaching watercolor for over twenty years.

During this 4-week class, students will learn and explore various techniques and learn the basics (and not-so-basics) of watercolor painting while completing exercises and paintings designed to elevate their skills and boost their confidence. The goal is to leave with a greater understanding of watercolor painting and its possibilities.

*Knowledge of basic drawing is assumed.

Areas to be explored:

  • Types and characteristics of watercolor paper
  • Types of watercolor brushes and their use
  • Color theory and characteristics of pigments
  • Composition and design
  • Value studies
  • Watercolor techniques including washes, wet on dry, wet on wet, dry brush
  • The use of masking fluid
  • Glazing (layering)
  • Negative painting
  • Tips and tricks
